Scratch Art

A fun, tactile technique for creating a unique scratchy artwork!

Ages: 5+

You will need:

⋒ White A4 paper

⋒ Oil pastels / crayons

⋒ Black acrylic paint

⋒ Liquid soap

⋒ Paintbrush

⋒ PVA glue

⋒ Scissors

⋒ Skewer / paddle pop stick / coin

  1. On a sheet of white paper, use bright oil pastels or crayons to make a pattern of large blocks of colour - don’t leave any gaps!

  2. Mix the black paint with a few drops of liquid soap then paint over your paper & leave to dry.

  3. On a separate sheet of paper, design an image to be stuck in the centre of your artwork - we went with a castle!

  4. Cut out your design & stick into on the dry painted paper.

  5. Using a skewer, paddle pop stick, coin, or the end of a paintbrush, add details to the artwork by scratching off the black paint so the colours underneath show through. We added flags, grass, flowers and of course, a princess!

You could try a space-themed image, under the sea or firework display!

Have fun!
